The legendary history of the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway has produced many famous racing families dating back to the Speedway Park days in the 1980s and that tradition has continued with the current crop of racers.

On Saturday night, long-time Bullring racing families return to victory lane in the ninth round of the Star Nursery Series 10-race 2024 campaign with names like Jacks, Ray, Giannini, Quartaro and Reif scoring wins Saturday in the annual Fan Appreciation Night at the fast 3/8-mile paved oval.

Entering Saturday’s action, drivers and teams set their sights on the Bullring winners’ circle as well as the class point standings in search of the coveted Star Nursery season-end cash.

In the two 40-lap Pro Late Model division feature races, it was Jaron Giannini, who is third generation racer and a multi-time Bullring main event winner over the years as well as his brother Branden, and another third generation Bullring racer Colton Ray taking top honors.

In the night’s opening event, Giannini jumped to the lead from his second starting position and battled young Gavin Ray late in the feature to secure his fourth Bullring win of the year and extend his Pro Late Model class point lead with one race remaining on Oct. 12.

Giannini, driving the No. 25 VersaTILE and Stone machine, entered the night’s doubleheader with a 69-point margin over Gavin Ray and edged closer to the track championship with Saturday’s win. G. Ray closed late the event but had to settle for the runner-up followed by his brother, Colton, T.J. Robert, Johnny Spilotro, Cody Brown and Mark Allison.

“The car was working well, but I had some shaking with the brakes in the corners,” said Giannini, who works at Sigma Performance Services during the week. “We’ll have to work on those brakes before race two. I always say we can improve the car, and we’ll plan to do that between races. I knew Gavin was there at the finish and just needed to hit my marks to the checkered flag.”

It was the 16-year-old Colton Ray, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Mike, and father, Steve, moving quickly to the front in the second 40-lapper Saturday night from his fifth starting position in his No. 71 Mikon Construction Late Model stock car. After Arizona’s T.J. Roberts led the field from lap three to ten, it was the high schooler who vaulted to the lead and really never looked back. Colton drove a consistent and strong pace for the next 29 laps as Giannini was trying to the close the gap on the youngster.

But Colton Ray was not to be denied with his first NASCAR Pro Late Model feature win over Giannini, brother, Gavin, Roberts, Allison, Spilotro, Cody Brown, David Anderson and David Fountain.

“Wow, this is my first Pro Late Model main event win and I’m so pumped,” said Colton Ray. “I can’t thank my Mikon Construction team and my dad enough for getting me here tonight. It’s a thrill. The car felt good in the first race but once I got the lead in race two, everything went well. I wasn’t sure if Jaron was to going to close the gap in the last ten laps, but I was able get a clean track and race to the finish.”

The Jacks brothers, Sam and Kyle, both put their respective machines in victory lane on Fan Appreciation Night with impressive feature wins.

Sam Jacks had worked hard on his No. 29 Battleborn Racing 602 Modified in the summer break and it showed throughout the evening in the Modified competition. Sam started from the pole over multi-time Bullring champion Doug Hamm in the 30-lap Modified final, and Hamm wasn’t about to let Jacks run away. Doug stayed within a couple of car lengths throughout the 30 circuit but couldn’t get close enough for the win.

Hamm, the current point leader entering Saturday night’s events, had to settle for second to S. Jacks at the checkered flag with third going to Brian Williams following by his brother, Ben Williams, Scott Ozborn, Brian Reed, David Boardman and Robby Clutts.

“The car really ran well tonight, especially when you can beat Doug Hamm,” said S. Jacks. “We worked on our car over the summer to get it much better for tonight’s event. And I think it showed with the pole and the win. I know we are in the battle with Doug for the track points championship and this win gives us a good shot going in the final race next month.”

For Kyle Jacks, it was a triumph in the 20-lap Super Stock main event with his potent No. 4 Battleborn Racing stock car after taking the lead from Don Geary on lap five. Jacks’ machine was the class of the field with his win over Geary, pole winner Gavin Ray and 2024 race winner Mike McKearn.

“We have a lot of friends and family here today, so it is great to have Sam and I both win our main events,” said K. Jacks. “It is always fun racing the Super Stock as Sam and I traded off in the car throughout the year. We aren’t really in the points but winning is our priority right now. Thanks to the fans for watching us have a fun time.”

One of the wildest races of the night came the always competitive 25-lap USLCI M&H Building Specialists/JBM Underground Legend Car main event when two young Las Vegas area racers – Tyle Reif and Cody Brown – battled right down to the checkered flag. Reif, the pole winner from Henderson, has been traveling on the ARCA Menards stock car series where he currently leads the West Division point standings.

But Brown, another talented teenager, was not giving Reif an inch during the 25-lap finale, as the former national Legends car champion stayed on Reif’s bumper to the 23rd lap when he dove to the inside of turn three and took the lead. But Tyler wasn’t about to let Cody run to the checkered flag as he came back on the last lap and made a similar move in turn three. Brown attempted to stay in the lead on the outside, but Reif held the advantage to the finish.

Third went to Ashton Williams followed by Chase Burgeson, Sean Salazar, Andy Hulcy, Stephen Brucker, Keaton Harbison, Ellie Brucker, Scott Harbison, Ryder Juarez, Brian Albright, Keller Meechudhone and Connor Podloski.

“Cody and I always seem to have a good battle in the Legend cars, and it was a fun race,” said Reif, who now travels to Bristol Motor Speedway for an upcoming ARCA Menard East race. “My car was quick but a few of the yellow flags helped the field bunch up for the restarts. That makes it tough to open up a gap. I could see Cody was right there and I had to get inside in turn three on the last lap.”

Jacob Quartaro put his family’s name back in the winner’s circle Saturday for the first time this season with an impressive win in the Nostalgia Street Rods Outlaw Factory Stocks 30-lap main event. The Quartaro family has scored many feature victories over the years and Jacob has been a contender in each race this year at the Bullring.

But this time, Jacob grabbed the lead on lap nine and pulled away from his competition after former track champion Michael Miller applied some early pressure. Third went to veteran Pete Meyer, early race leader Nick Lautenbach, Anthony Mann, Stephen Irvine, Vinny Raucci Jr., and Rob Pfaffly.

“It feels nice to be back in victory lane and it’s my first win of the season,” said Quartaro. “My brother let me race his car and it is fast. I’m not sure I’ll let him have it back now. I’m ready for go racing again now.”

There was a great story in the popular Skid Plate cars Saturday night as the crowd voted to run the event in reverse direction on the 3/8-mile oval. Obviously, some of the field hadn’t done that competition previously and no one knew what to expect.

Well, it was wild, unpredictable and exciting with a new winner in victory lane after the carnage had cleared with newcomer Chris Muecke of Henderson taking the checkered flag. Driving Ken Coombs’ backup, Muecke made his Skid Plate debut a memorable one as he waved and dodged wreckage throughout the oval.

Muecke looked like a Skip Plate veteran in the No. 1W car with a victory over Jeff Dailey and Ken Coombs. Taking fourth was policeman Ed Shoemaker followed by Dylan Hummel, Rich McMahon, AJ Hintsala, Christina Harper, Connor Hart, Cecilia Dillie, Ben Williams, Kelsey Rogers, Greg Lee and Kaycee Frost. Shoemaker also won the 6-lap Skid Plate trophy dash.

Back in victory lane in the USLCI M&H Building Specialists/JBM Underground Bandoleros 12-lap main was teenager Wyatt Layne, who won earlier this year at the Bullring. Layne had to fight his way past early leader James Trimmer and grabbed the lead in traffic on the 11th lap. Trimmer took the runner-up spot followed by Jeff Connors, Leila Trimmer, Malcolm Mancias, Maison Albright, Dylan Layne and Karson Orth.

Friday’s preliminary competition had James Trimmer win the eight-lap USLCI M&H Building Specialists/JBM Underground Bandolero main while Steve Brucker took the 20-lap USLCI M&H Building Specialists/JBM Underground Legends Young Lions and Reif captured the 20-lapper for the Pro/Master class.
