A Bullring racing legend joined the winner’s circle celebrations Saturday night at the Bullring at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the return to the fast 3/8-mile paved oval for the “Summer Fun” Night, Round 8 in the 10-race 2023 Star Nursery Series.
Doug Hamm, the multi-time Bullring series champion, came back to his familiar spot – victory lane -- Saturday driving the No.4X Modified to a dominating victory in the 20-lap 602 Modified main event, as the local legend stopped the winning streak of brothers Sam and Kyle Jacks with another impressive triumph.
Hamm, who announced his racing retirement several years ago, makes an appearance at the popular short track every once in awhile and makes sure the paddock area and the spectators still remember his talented skills in a fast Modified machine. On Saturday, Hamm, the North Las Vegas driver, took the lead on the opening lap and never looked back for another appearance in the Bullring victory lane.
Second went to multi-time 2023 race winner Sam Jacks with another 2023 winner Brenden Rusbarsky rounding out the podium (top-three). Taking fourth was Kayli Barker Peterson, who returned after she received her Masters degree last month at Purdue University in Indiana, with early 2023 race winner Kyle Jacks scoring the fifth position.
“It always feels great to come back to the Bullring and return to victory lane,” said Hamm. “I have been sitting around and getting a little bored. So, we put together this car for the rest of the year. We want salute the passing of our friend Mike Crisp, who helped so many of the racers here at the Bullring. It’s been a tough few months with the loss of Mike and Dick Cobb. That’s why it is nice to win for them.”
While Hamm was back in victory lane Saturday, he was one of the many who returned to the Bullring winner’s circle with feature wins going Jeff Peterson, Cody Brown, Ben Williams, Matt Frady Jr. and Jason Kiser.
But there were three newcomers to victory lane Saturday including Donny St. Ours of Upland, CA, in the 30-lap Pro Late Models Race 1, Keaton Harbison of Las Vegas in the 12-lap USCLI MH Building Specialists/JBM Underground Bandoleros main and “Cowboy” Bryson Brown of Las Vegas in the 20-lap Junior Late Models finale.
St. Ours, driving the No. 78 Sigma Performance Services machine for regular racer Ricky Gutierrez, jumped to the lead early in the 30-lapper and kept to strong pace as regulars Jeff Peterson, Justin Johnson and Jaron Giannini worked their way through the field in an effort to make a run at St. Ours. But the California driver, a veteran at tracks like Orange Show and Irwindale, wasn’t going to give the regular competitors any breaks with a solid performance into victory lane.
Peterson, the current Bullring Pro Late Model point leader, pressured St. Ours in the latter portion of the event but had to settle for the runner-up spot follow by Johnson, Giannini and Utah’s young charger Monty Tipton.
“It’s nice to come to the Bullring and win here in Las Vegas,” said St. Ours. “Joe Farré at Sigma called me and asked if I would drive the No. 78 as Ricky was racing off-road this weekend. This is a great way to thank him and the guys at Sigma. We made a few changes, and the car was very good in the main. It’s always fun to come here and race with the top guys.”
In the second Pro Late Model feature, 35-lap, it was Peterson back in victory with his No. 90 stock car with a win over Johnson, St. Ours, California veteran Linny White and Giannini. Taking sixth through tenth were Tipton, defending Bullring series champion Scott Gafforini, Johnny Spilotro, Aaron McMorran and T.J. Roberts.
Another first-time winner Saturday at the Bullring was young Bryson Brown, known as “Cowboy” in the pits and to the crowd. Brown drove his No. 45 Ameripro Service Systems machine to the heat race win and controlled the 20-lap Junior Late Model final from the start. Brown started in karting, then moved to Legends before going to the bigger Late Model cars.
Cameron “Cam Man” Carraway took second in the Junior Late Models followed by Ashton Leonard, Caden Cordova and Brody Manning.
It was an exciting night for the 12-year-old Harbison, who held off Bullring champion Leonard for the last five laps of the 12-lap USCLI MH Building Specialists/JBM Underground Bandoleros feature.
Keaton jumped to the lead at the start and held a strong advantage early before Leonard began to close the gap by lap seven. While Leonard continued to close in, Harbison hit his marks and a solid pace to take his first Bullring checkered flag. At the finish, it was Harbison, Leonard, Logan Gresser, Joseph Montoya, Amelia Suell, Leil Trimmer, Braxton Garcia, James Trimmer and Piper Suell.
“Wow, this is very exciting to win here at the Bullring,” said Harbison. “And beating the champion Ashton too. I have to thank my parents for giving me the chance to race in the Bandoleros. This is a night I won’t forget.”
Cody Brown, the reigning Semi-Pro Legends National champion from Las Vegas, was back in a familiar position with his popular No. 88X car in the winner’s circle but it wasn’t easy. Starting third, Brown quickly moved to the front, but his competition wasn’t about to let him get away.
Jordan Holloway, the defending Pro Legends National champion from Henderson, NV, pressured Brown from the halfway point in the 25-lapper and just missed taking the top spot. Third went to top qualifier Nathan Quella of Yorba Linda, CA, followed by Roberts, Alex Roe, Lonnie Hochstetler, Andy Hulcy, Colton Ray, Tanner Ash and Scott Harbison.
Ben Williams, the multi-time Bullring Skid Plate champion, came from a back straightaway start to stop the winning streak of rookie Greg Ray Saturday in the always-popular 12-lap Skid Plate main event. Williams and Ray came through the 14-car field and weaved their way around the spinning cars to battle for the top spot by lap ten. Ray looked to be in position for a third straight feature victory, but Williams kept his No. 6 low in the groove and slid by for the win.
After Williams and Ray, the finishing order was Jeff Dailey, who also led in the 12-lapper, Racer X, Jeff Bargerhuff, Berenice Hernandez, Ken Coombs, Christie Harper, Greg Matta and fireman Andrew Molitor.
The opening event of the night, the Battle of the Badges, again featured two firefighters versus two police officers in a four-lap Skid Plate race. The firefighters were looking to even the score this year in the first seven races where the police led four wins to three.
This time around, it was the firefighters who jumped to the lead and Brandon Rants of the Henderson Fire Department taking the victory over Molitor from the Clark County Fire Department. Third went to Jeff Freeman of the Nevada Highway Patrol with fourth to Michael McCleve of the University Police Department. This week’s “Battle of the Badges” was in the memory of Steve Bernach.
Now with a four to four winning score for each of the “Badges,” there will be one more “Battle of the Badges” preliminary event (June 17) before the big finale with nine drivers in the July 3 “Night of Fire” for the “Badges Championship.
Winning again with a last lap pass in the 20-lap NASCAR Nostalgia Street Rods Outlaw Factory Stocks was Matt Frady Jr., who made the inside move on leader Dallas Simonette on the final circuit for another Bullring victory.
Simonette took the runner-up slot followed by reigning Bullring champion Michael Miller, 2023 race winners Sheri Goldstrom and Rob Pfaffly.
Continuing his winning ways in the 20-lap NASCAR Super Stock division was Jason Kiser in his No. 49 machine over Bill Paddock Jr., Adam Simon, 2023 race winner Don Geary and Californian Rich DeLong III.
