There were many emotions flowing Saturday night in Round Six of the Star Nursery Short Track Series, the Military Appreciation Night, at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as the fast 3/8-mile oval saluted the veterans and current servicemen.

In addition, the track paid tribute to a fallen champion known as the “Wizard,” seven-time Bullring series titleholder, Scott Gafforini, who passed away on May 23 from cancer at age 57. Scott’s popular No. 38 race car and his family opened the night’s festivities with an emotional eulogy from fellow racer, Johnny Spilotro. Gafforini was Spilotro’s mentor and Johnny gave a some of Scott’s past knowledge to the pit crew and fans.

Internationally known singer, Sahara, a regular at the Bullring, gave a spectacular rendition of “Ave Maria” before Gafforini’s No. 38 and Spilotro’s No. 77 toured the Bullring seven times to salute Scott’s championships.

On the track, it was a busy night with the West Coast touring stock car series, CARS TOUR WEST, making its debut at the Bullring with a strong field of top Pro Late Model drivers set to battle for 100 laps and collect some serious money at the end of the night. Some locals like 2023 Bullring track champion Jeff Peterson, young stars Kylie Ith, Colton and Gavin Ray, T.J. Roberts and weekly contenders Jaron Giannini and Spilotro were taking on the traveling stars such as Kern Raceway winner Dylan Zampa, Stockton 99 Speedway winner Henry Barton, Irwindale star Trevor Huddleston, Parker Malone, Joey Iest, Linny White and lady racer Kenna Mitchell.

In qualifying, Zampa and Ith made up the front row of the 22-car field and looked to be the early favorites for the 100-lapper. But things got wild early in the 100-lapper when the red flag flew with Iest’s car wedged on its side in turn three and Ith’s machine stuck against the wall. With two of the contenders out of action, White held the advantage in some tight quarters against Giannini, Malone, Huddleston and C. Ray in laps 15 to 24, but Huddleston made a charge to take the lead for the next 12 laps before Malone, the young Redlands, Calif., driver, held the lead and looked strong.

After being caught up a yellow flag crash early in the race, Peterson, a multi-time Bullring race winner from Grand Terrace, Calif., was able to drive through the field and jumped into the top-five by lap 44. At the halfway point, Malone held a solid lead as Huddleston and Peterson battled for second. By lap 57, Peterson had cleared Huddleston and began to close on Malone.

However, the red flag appeared again on lap 62 with a car losing oil around half of the track. A super cleanup effort by the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Safety team got the cars back in action quickly and Peterson made his move to the lead on the green flag. The pilot of the No. 51 slowly opened his margin and contact between White and Malone for second stretched the advantage.

By lap 75, it was Peterson by a straightaway and fought a troubled clutch to the finish for another Bullring triumph. Malone took the runner-up after a late fight with Mitchell who made her second straight CARS TOUR WEST podium. Rounding out the top-five with White and C. Ray, who was the top finishing 2024 Bullring regular.  Placing in the top-ten were Giannini, Andrew Chapman, Bryce Bezanson, Christian Bazen and Nash Youngren.

“Early in the race, I got turned around and saw the whole field coming at me and I thought my night done,” said Peterson in victory lane. “My clutch was slipping early in the race, and I wasn’t sure if I could finish. I couldn’t believe it held on. Parker Malone raced me hard and clean, and it’s fun racing with these guys. I can’t believe we are back in victory lane at the Bullring after a great year last year.

“We had a special young man riding with us tonight, Scott Montez, who lost his battle in the Navy in 2019, and his family is here tonight. I hope Mike and Tammy, his parents, had a great night. This win is for their family. It was tough conditions in the race with the oil on the track and the hot weather. But I’ll take the win.”

As usual in the USLCI M&H Building Specialists/JBM Underground Legend Cars, the wheel-to-wheel action was sensational with some outstanding racers battling throughout the 30-lap feature before former Bullring track champion Cody Brown of Las Vegas coming out on top.

It wasn’t easy for Brown against a solid field, and he had to make the last lap pass over Stephen Brucker of Alpine, Calif., to secure his third Bullring main event win of the year.

Swapping the lead was a common theme for the Legends feature with Brown, Brucker and Ashton Williams within inches throughout the race. And young Tyler Reif of Henderson, Nev., came from the rear of the field to run second on lap 16 but spun on lap 19 in turn four to exit the challengers.

On the lap 19 restart, Brucker, Williams and Brown fought for the lead with Brucker hold off the young Williams until lap 22 when the Yucaipa, Calif., racer took the front spot, but Brown wasn’t about to give up with a charge to the lead. On lap 26, Brown drove the No. 88X machine to the and tried to hold off Brucker and Williams. Brucker, in the No. 2 car, passed for the lead on lap 29, but, with the white flag flying, Brown, dove inside in turn one and didn’t look back.

At the checkered flag, it was Brown, Brucker, Williams, Reif and David Mayhew for the top-five followed Logan Chambers, Wyatt Dent, Keller Meechudhone, Taylor Mayhew and Tanner Ash.

“Stephen and I touched on the front straight and I didn’t mean to hit him there,” said Brown. “We were racing very hard and that can happen in this series. It was time for me to win again. My luck has been running thin lately. When you are up front with the fast guys, you are driving 100 per cent and you can’t relax. Late in the race, everything is heated up on the car and they are hard to drive. I want to thank my folks, Paul Johnson Drywall, Sherwin Williams, Tour Two Solutions, 24/7 Heating and Air, Elbach Springs and McMillin Racing.”

In the NASCAR Modifieds main event Saturday night, it was dominated by Kyle Jacks who has been on a tear lately in the No. 41 Battleborn Racing machine, as the Las Vegas driver was quick qualifier and jumped to the lead at the drop of green flag.

Kyle pulled away from his brother, Sam, and multi-time Bullring champion Doug Hamm in the 35-lap feature for his fourth 2024 Bullring main victory. Fourth went Brian Williams with fifth to Ben Williams.

Other wire-to-wire wins at Bullring included Vinny Raucci Jr. in the No. 96X car in the 25-lap NASCAR Nostalgia Street Rods Outlaw Factory Stocks over Nick Lautenbach, Michael Miller, Pete Meyer, Jacob Quartaro and Rob Pfaffly, while Colton Ray piloted his No. 18 mount to the 25-lap NASCAR Super Stock victory over Don Geary, Kyle Jacks, Mike McKearn and Adam Simon.

One of the most competitive races was the opening main event of the night in the 12-lap USLCI M&H Building Specialists/JBM Underground Bandoleros with Colorado’s Liam Hammond scoring his first Bullring feature over Peyton Harbison, James Trimmer and Braxton Garcia. Rounding out the Bandoleros finishing order was Layla MacKenzie, Dylan Layne, Elizabeth MacKenzie, Leila Trimmer, Maison Albright, Karson Orth and Aspyn Lange.

The always-popular Skid Plate cars kept it wild as usual as the finale of the night with Chris Bridsong recording the late pass for the win in his No. 17 car after leaders Ed Shoemaker and Jeff Dailey spun in turn three on the eighth lap. That opened the door for the veteran Birdsong, who ran many years as Racer X in the Skid Plates, and Chris took the checkered flag in front of Greg Lee, Dylan Hummel, Dailey, Shoemaker, Ben Williams, Christina Harper, Ken Commbs, Greg Matta, Al Hintsala, Kaycee Front and Rich McMahon.

In Friday’s USLCI M&H Building Specialists/JBM Underground Bandolero main, Hammond also top honors in the eight-lap main event, while Brucker won the 20-lap USLCI M&H Building Specialists/JBM Underground Legends Young Lions and Reif scored the 20-lapper for the Pro/Master class.
