Local racers have been finding the Bullring victory lane regularly already this year in 2025 Short Track Series at the 3/8-mile paved oval, but that theme changed in the USLCI Legend Car division last Saturday night in the popular, annual “Hometown Heroes Night” saluting the Las Vegas area firefighters and policemen.
The honorary starters in the night’s opening race were Grayson and Andrew Roscow, the sons of the late North Las Vegas policeman Jason Roscow who lost his life on duty in February. This was a salute to the brave “Hometown Heroes” who risk their lives on a daily basis.
Of the 25-driver USLCI Legend Car field, sixteen of the racers were from areas outside of Nevada and they made their presence known throughout Saturday’s racing program.
Coming all the way from Miller Place, N.Y., young Ben Morabito started on the pole position and fought off some tough competition before scoring his first Bullring win in his No. 17YL machine. The 25-lap main event saw some wild action including a seven-car pileup on the front straightaway with two cars getting upside down. Luckily, everyone walked away, and the action resumed with Morabito at the front of the pack.
Morabito battled with numerous contenders during the feature, but he took the checkered flag ahead of Trayc Walker Scott of Parker, Colo., and former Bullring main winner Sean Salazar of Albuquerque, N.M. The top Las Vegas finisher was former U.S. Nationals winner Branden Giannini of Henderson, Nev., followed by Las Vegas’ Colton Ray.
Finishers six through ten were all out-of-town drivers led by Darrell Stewart of Arvada, Colo., Jared Torres of Riverside, Calif., former Las Vegan Spencer Gallagher of Statesville, N.C., Spencer Bradshaw of Troutman, N.C., and former Bullring winner Brody Whitbeck of Golden Valley, Ariz.
“During the red flag period, I needed to stay calm and patient and look for a good restart,” said Morabito. “After that restart, it seems like smooth sailing to the checkered flag. It’s great to come out to Las Vegas race in the Legends cars. I’m looking for as much seat time as I can right now.”
While Morabito recorded his first Bullring win, a local star who was a former Legends National Champion in young Cody Brown drove to his first NASCAR Pro Late Model main event triumph Saturday night in a spirited battle in the 40-lap contest.
Brown, the Las Vegas racer, started on the pole after recording the fastest qualifying time in his No. 88 stock, but it was former Bullring winner R. J. Smotherman of Pahrump, Nev., who grabbed the lead at the green flag from the outside of the front row. Smotherman led Brown for the first 20 laps, but Cody closed the gap and took the lead on lap 25. He then held the advantage to the finish.
Smotherman, the former Bullring Skid Plate champion, took the runner-up spot followed by S. Gallagher in the potent No. 25 machine, young T.J. Roberts, veterans Johnny Spilotro and Mark Allison.
As a usual occurrence at the Bullring, the popular Jack boys – Sam and Kyle – found their way to the Bullring winner’s circle on Saturday with impressive wins in the NASCAR 602 Modified and the Super Stock feature races.
In the 40-lap Modified event, Kyle Jacks jumped the lead from the pole but brother Sam wasn’t about to have his brother win another main event, as Sam tracked Kyle and took the lead on the front straightaway at the mid-point of the race. Sam continued to open his margin and as Kyle, ten-time Bullring champion Doug Hamm and young Jaron Giannini fought for the second slot.
At the checkered, it was Sam Jacks with an impressive win over Hamm and Giannini, who had a brilliant battle for second. K. Jacks took fourth followed by Kayli Peterson, Brina Reed, David Boardman, Ben Williams, Scott Ozborn, Jimmy Petrie and Brina Williams.
“This car was really hooked up tonight,” said S. Jacks after the race. “This is the best car I’ve raced here at the Bullring. The credit goes to my dad, my brother and the whole Battleborn Racing team. I hope we can keep up this trend in victory lane.”
Meanwhile, K. Jacks was the dominant driver in the 20-lap Super Stock finale after an initial fight with veteran Don Geary. Third went to Bill Paddock Jr. with Kyle Turner in the fourth spot.
Returning to the Bullring on Saturday night after a long absence were the high-competitive Mini Stocks with a solid 13-car field for the 12-lap main. But Travis Boyle didn’t let the rest of the field have a chance at the drop of the green flag, as the local driver took his No. 51 car to the front and never looked back for an easy win. Second went to A.J. Hintsala followed by Brandon Conner, Melissa Lurkins, Jordan Mast, Austin Tognotti and Ben Williams.
“We put this car together in two weeks with a lot of help from our friends,” said Boyle. “And this is my first race in the Mini Stocks. It’s a great way to start in victory lane.”
The twin 20-lap NASCAR Outlaw Factory Stocks events were tight battles with former Bullring champion Michael Miller defeating his teammate Pete Meyer, Anthony Mann, Rob Pfaffly and Nick Lautenbach in the opener, but Meyer came back in the finale to beat Miller, Lautenbach, Jacob Quartaro and Pfaffly.
“I could see Pete coming in my mirrors,” said Miller after the first race. “It’s tough to see the car you help build closing in on you for the lead. Then in the second one, I tried to close on Pete, but he was too strong to get past him. I’m glad we had 1-2 finishes tonight.”
The wacky Skid Plate division never disappoints the Bullring fans and this week’s 12-lap feature was no different. Dylan Hummel, driving the popular No. 95 “Lightning McQueen” car, battled former Bullring champion Ken Coombs early in the event before taking the lead. Hummel drove a strong, consistent race and, despite losing a mirror mid-race, took the checkered flag over two-time 2025 winner Greg Lee, Coombs, Austin Tognotti and Rich McMahon.
“I got the lead, but I kept looking for Greg to close in,” said Hummel in victory. “I lost my mirror, and I couldn’t see if he was coming after me. Without the mirror, I knew I just to drive hard and get to that checkered flag.”
Another strong field of USLCI Bandolero cars entered Saturday’s action and the large field was again changing Wyatt Layne of Las Vegas. But 2024 Bullring track champion, James Trimmer, gave him a good tussle before spinning in turn four. Trimmer came back to finish fifth in the 12-lapper. Second went to Caitlyn Ford followed by Leila Trimmer, Braxton Garcia and J. Trimmer.
NEXT RACE: The annual “Military & Veterans Appreciation Night” is next event at the Bullring and is set for Saturday, April 19, with the Pro Late Models, 602 Modifieds, USLCI Legend Cars, Super Stock, Factory Outlaws, Skid Plates, Mini Stocks and Bandoleros.
